Weeds are defined as plants that grow against the man’s intention with the cultivated plants. However, certain types of weeds also have detrimental impact on human health. One of the most perennial weeds is ragweed.
Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is one of the invasive weed species. This plant originates from North America. It was transferred to Europe in the 19th century and has since spread rapidly. In Serbia, it was first recorded in 1953 in the vicinity of Sremski Karlovci. One plant can produce more than 1-8 million pollen grains which can be dispersed by wind onto the surface of several square kilometers. The pollen grain maintains the capability of germination up to 40 years.
Ragweed pollen causes allergies in 10% of people. Allergies are the most intense in when the concentration of pollen in the air is the highest, usually in July/August and September. Allergic reactions occur in the upper respiratory organs most often in the form of shortness of breath and fever with a tendency of causing an asthma attack. As ragweed is widely spread in Serbia, allergy to it is very common.
* Measures to combat ragweed can b, mechanical and chemical. The most effective way to combat ragweed is direct eradication by pulling it aout of the ground by its root in areas where they occur asindividual plants.
Mechanical control measures include ragweed mowing. Mechanical control is the first choice in countries that have a problem with the expansive spread of ragweed. Mechanical measures are very important in urban or residential areas around apartment buildings, office buildings, health institutions, schools, kindergartens, etc. The plant is mowed before flowering at the height of at least 5 cm above the ground. If the plant is not cut low enough, it is fully grown again in 20 days.
Chemical measures include the use of selective environmentally friendly herbicides effective in suppressing ragweed. In order to prevent the occurrence of undesirable phenomena caused by ragweed, it is destroyed by high quality chemical agents. BIO SPIN Ltd. is equipped with all the necessary equipment and machinery required for herbicide application in weed control.
