Fumigation
Effective control of stored product pests using gas for the complete protection of grains, dried fruit, tobacco, and other food products.
Concept and Definition of Fumigation
Fumigation is the process of controlling insects, mites, and rodents by applying fumigants—chemical substances that, under specific temperatures and pressures, exist in a gaseous state at concentrations sufficient to cause the death of harmful organisms exposed to them.
This method is used to treat goods of agricultural origin, such as:
- Grains,
- Soy,
- Sunflower,
- Beans,
- Medicinal and dried herbs,
- Dried fruits and vegetables,
- Tobacco,
- Teas,
- Cured meat products and other food items.
The most commonly used fumigant is phosphine (PH₃), an extremely toxic gas that requires special safety measures and handling.
The Fumigation Process
Fumigation is carried out in a closed and hermetically sealed space to prevent gas leakage. The process can also be performed under plastic (nylon) sheets, either indoors or outdoors.
Phosphine gas is generated from aluminum or magnesium phosphide under the influence of moisture and temperature. After the reaction, non-toxic residues (aluminum or magnesium disulfide) remain. Phosphine does not harm the goods or equipment in the treated areas.
After fumigation, products can be placed on the market 48 hours after the facility has been ventilated. There is also the option of liquid fumigation—flow-through disinsection—which is performed by applying the preparation directly onto the goods.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Fumigation
Advantages of Fumigation
- Very high efficiency
- Effective against all insect developmental stages
- Penetrates hard-to-reach areas
- Leaves no residues in the products
- Allows for the treatment of packaged goods
Disadvantages of Fumigation
- High toxicity of fumigants
- Requires strict safety measures for the area and personnel
- High cost of fumigants
- Requires training and protective equipment for workers
- Resistance in some insect species
Economic Importance of Fumigation
Grains play a crucial role in human nutrition but are also a target for numerous stored product pests. The presence of insects and other organisms not only causes losses due to consumption but also contaminates and damages healthy grains, significantly reducing the economic value of the products.
For this reason, fumigation has become a standard protection measure in warehouses and processing facilities, ensuring the quality and safety of agricultural products.
